| Iran to restart nuclear talks in October |
| Iran has agreed to hold talks with world powers on its nuclear program early next month on its latest nuclear proposals. Saeed Jalili, Iran's senior nuclear negotiator, and Javier Solana, the EU foreign policy chief, said they had agreed a date of October 1. The talks will be between Iranian representatives and those from Britain, China, France, Germany, the US and Russia. |

Libya celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Al-Fatah Revolution. Tripoli officially hosted this year's ceremonies had its own unique style of marking the day with fireworks dominating the sky, military units making parades in their colorful uniforms, dancers carefully twisting their bellies to keep up with the tune, tankers showing their military might and horse riding performers among others. |

| Hatoyama elected as Japan's prime minister |
| Japan's parliament elected Yukio Hatoyama as the country's new prime minister on Wednesday in an historic shift of power. The vote by the lower house of the parliament was virtually assured. Hatoyama's Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) won a landslide election last month, and controls 308 of the lower chamber's 480 seats. |

| Somali demands for French hostage |
| Somali Islamists have issued a set of demands for the release of a French security adviser they seized in July. Al-Shabab say they will free the man if France stops its support for the weak UN-backed government and ends its anti-piracy patrols in Somali waters. The group also wants African Union peacekeepers withdrawn from Mogadishu.

| New Osama bin Laden message surfaces |
| A new audio tape has surfaced on an Islamist website in which al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden sends a message to the American people. In the ten minute recording the voice which is purported to be that of America's most wanted terrorist, says the U.S. president is "powerless" to stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The authenticity of the audio recording could not be independently verified. The message was released by As-Sahab, Al-Qaeda's media wing, and distributed to several Jihadist websites. Part of the taped message condemns the United States support of Israel. |
