CONTRARY to reports in the Western press, there was no “hero’s welcome” for Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi when he returned to Libya earlier this month. There was not in fact any official reception for the return of Mr. Megrahi, who had been convicted and imprisoned in Scotland for the 1988 Lockerbie bombing. The strong reactions to these misperceptions must not be allowed to impair the improvements in a mutually beneficial relationship between Libya and the West.

in November 2001 the United States went to war in Afghanistan with two particular goals: one to remove Taliban from power, and two end Al-Qaeda’s existence in that country. Other goals set for what became known as the “war on terror” included: making America more secure, end terrorism in the world, and deprive Al-Qaeda from its hideout it used to enjoy in Afghanistan under Taliban. Eight years later this year, and no end in sight for America’s war in Afghanistan. Most of the progress made in the “ war on terror” has actually been made outside that country with the help of other nations and mostly without military force! In Afghanistan itself the only flourishing trade seems to be consumer goods market and opium production which increased three folders this year three times what it was under Taliban!

As this week commemorates the 74th anniversary of the execution of the Libyan resistance leader, Omar Almukhtar, it would be most prudent to briefly discuss his life and chronicle his experiences defending the nation. Omar Almukhtar’s life was encapsulated in a film titled the Lion of Desert (*). The film paints him as a freedom fighter that resisted the Italian occupation of his homeland, Libya. However, there is a lot more to our hero Omar Almukhtar than a feature film.
